Riad or hotel in Marrakech: how to choose the right accommodation?

It's the question almost every traveller asks before their first trip: riad or hotel in Marrakech? Both options have their strengths, but they offer radically different experiences. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose the accommodation that truly suits your trip.

Riad vs hotel: what's the difference?

A riad is a traditional Moroccan house built around a central patio, usually located in the Medina. Converted into a guesthouse, it typically has only a handful of rooms. A hotel, on the other hand, is more often found in the new town (Gueliz, Hivernage) or on the outskirts (the Palmeraie), with more rooms and facilities.

The advantages of a riad

An authentic immersion

Zellige tilework, carved plaster, sculpted cedarwood, a fountain in the patio: staying in a riad means experiencing Moroccan architecture from the inside. Every riad has its own history and personality, far removed from the uniformity of hotel chains.

Privacy and peace

With only a few rooms, the atmosphere is peaceful and personal. Behind its thick walls, the patio is a haven of coolness and silence, just a few steps from the bustle of the souks.

A personal welcome

In a riad, the team knows every guest by their first name. Sightseeing tips, restaurant bookings, organised excursions or a home-cooked dinner: the service is tailored to you.

A location in the heart of the Medina

Most of the monuments, the souks and Jemaa el-Fna square can be explored on foot. No need for a taxi to head back and rest between visits.

Things to check before booking a riad

  • Access: many riads are tucked away at the end of pedestrian alleys. Check whether a car can get close, especially if you're arriving with luggage.
  • Temperature comfort: air conditioning for summer, heating or a fireplace for winter nights.
  • Services: breakfast, meals, hammam, airport transfers.
  • The neighbourhood: some areas of the Medina are very lively, others quieter and more residential.

When is a hotel the better choice?

Let's be honest: a hotel may suit you better if you're looking for a large swimming pool and on-site activities, if you're travelling with young children who need space to play, or if you're coming for a seminar or business event in the new town. The large resorts of the Palmeraie are also ideal for those who mainly want to relax rather than explore the city.

Our verdict

  • Choose a riad for a cultural or romantic stay or a honeymoon, to explore the Medina on foot and experience Marrakech from the inside.
  • Choose a hotel for a lazy poolside holiday, a business trip or large families.

The best of both worlds at Riad El Noujoum

Located in the Kasbah, between the two royal palaces and right by the Saadian Tombs, Riad El Noujoum combines the authenticity of a traditional riad with the conveniences of a hotel: car access right to the door, airport transfers (about 15 minutes), hammam and massages, Moroccan meals on request and organised excursions. Our eight rooms and suites, named after the stars, some with a sitting room and fireplace, invite you to unplug.

“In a hotel, you sleep in Marrakech. In a riad, you live in Marrakech.”

Luxury riad in Marrakech: an authentic stay in the heart of the Medina

Behind a discreet door in an alley of the Kasbah, one of the oldest quarters of the Marrakech Medina, lies a world apart: a leafy patio with its pool, a gently murmuring fountain, sun-drenched terraces and the scent of orange blossom. Welcome to Riad El Noujoum, your haven of peace in the heart of the Red City.

“A riad is Moroccan architecture in all its philosophy: austere on the outside, sumptuous on the inside. A world turned towards its heart, like a flower opening away from prying eyes.”

What is a riad?

The word “riad” comes from the Arabic rawda, meaning garden. Traditionally, a riad is an urban Moroccan residence built around a central patio with a fountain and greenery. Its deliberately plain façades protect an interior of great decorative richness.

Today, many of Marrakech's riads have been restored and turned into guesthouses full of character. They offer an authentic and intimate alternative to large hotels. Staying in a riad means choosing Marrakech in its purest essence.

Riad El Noujoum, “the riad of the stars”

El Noujoum means “the stars” in Arabic, and each of our rooms is named after a star or constellation: Antares, Vega, Lyre, Vénus, Céphée, Carène, Sirius and Orion. Once a festive hall where joyful weddings were celebrated, the riad has been fully renovated with respect for traditional Moroccan architecture: zellige, marble, carved cedarwood and chiselled plasterwork.

The house has kept its spirit of conviviality and light: a warm, personal atmosphere far from mass tourism. Discover our story.

Our rooms and suites

The riad has eight rooms and suites in four categories. True to the spirit of the house, they have no television: here, you come to unplug.
